Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants” was named best motion picture drama Sunday at the 69th Golden Globes ceremony.
The film centers on the personal travails of a wealthy Hawaiian man (George Clooney) who struggles to parent his two daughters after his wife suffers a brain injury that leaves her in a coma. Heading into the awards show, the Fox Searchlight film had been considered the favorite to win in the category.
Both Clooney and Shailene Woodley, who plays his eldest child, were nominated for their performances and Payne nominated for his direction and for his screenplay for the film, which he penned with Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, and which was adapted from the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings. Clooney won for lead actor in a drama.
