King-Drew senior forward Timothy Thompson, who collapsed in the Gardena High visitors’ locker room Monday night after his team lost an 80-76 overtime game, was alert and responsive while undergoing tests at the Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance.

It was first reported that Thompson was headed to Gardena Memorial, but King-Drew Coach Khary Hervey said Thompson was transported to the Torrance facility instead. He went to see Thompson after he accompanied the boy’s and girl’s varsity and junior varsity basketball teams back to their campus after games against Gardena.

‘Tim was alert, talking and moving around at the hospital,’ Hervey said. ‘They were still taking tests, and they still wouldn’t say what happened to him.’

After the game, Thompson, who scored 17 points against Gardena, slumped over in the locker room while Hervey was addressing the team. Thompson was caught by a teammate before he hit the ground.

When Thompson was unresponsive to Hervey and his teammates, paramedics were summoned. He was treated in the locker room before being transported to the hospital.
