A Matador vs. a Buccaneer. Sounds like zany fun to me. Actually, sounds like the Suburban League has its biggest battle of the season.
The Bellflower Buccaneers will host the La Mirada Matadores at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Both teams have identical league records -- 7-0-1 -- and are tied for first place. Bellflower (13-7-1 overall) has not lost since Jan. 2, and La Mirada (13-4-3) hasn’t dropped one since Jan. 3.
Now, let’s take a trek down Trivia Avenue...
Question: What is the word origin of matador?
Answer: Means ‘bull killer’ and is of Arabic derivation.
Question: Okay, how about the origin of buccaneer?
Answer: Said to come from the word ‘buccan’ -- a wooden framework used to roast meat -- which the rowdy seafarers would use to smoke fish, wild pigs and turtles to stock their ships.
