The hour is drawing close, and somebody’s going to go home disappointed Saturday when top-seeded Newport Harbor (31-3) plays second-seeded Mira Costa (31-5) in the Southern Section-Toyota Division I finals at 7:30 p.m. at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Newport Harbor has lost only one game in the playoffs, and hasn’t lost a five-game match all season. The Sailors are led by 6-foot-8 setter Kyle Caldwell, but have three other players headed to Division I colleges. Their sweep of fourth-seeded Santa Margarita made them look invincible, but that was on their home court.
These division finalists have played each other before this season. Mira Costa beat Newport in three games at the Best of the West tournament in March, and lost in four games at Newport Harbor.
Mira Costa, which has twice won five-game playoff matches on the road, is led by Dylan Kordic, the subject of a Daily Breeze feature. The Mustangs were beaten in last year’s final by Esperanza.
The match begins after second-seeded Santa Barbara (30-4) plays top-seeded Valencia (34-2) in the Division II final, which is set to begin at 5 p.m.
