Robert L. Schuman, a 30-year-old stockbroker, was elected chairman of the San Diego County Republican Central Committee late Monday with the support of both young Republicans and some of the party’s old guard. Schuman was selected for the two-year term over long-time activist Bettie Kujawa in what both said was “one of the most intense campaigns” ever launched to head the committee. Kujawa ran on her experience and her business and political ties in San Diego, while Schuman argued that the party must work aggressively to attract new constituencies. Also elected were Byron Wear, first vice chairman; Rosemary Barrett Smith, second vice chairman; Joy Galloway, treasurer; Nell Piper, secretary.
