2 Earthquakes Hit Japanese Archipelago

TOKYO — Two strong earthquakes, both with undersea epicenters, rocked the ends of the Japanese archipelago Friday, the Central Meteorological Agency said.
National Police Agency officials said there were no reports of damage or casualties from either of the quakes, which occurred within six hours of one another.
Officials of the meteorological agency said the first temblor struck at 5:57 a.m. off Amami-Oshima, an island north of Japan’s southernmost prefecture of Okinawa. The second shook Ofunato, a major northern fishing town, at 11:35 a.m. Its epicenter was located off the coast of Iwate prefecture, about 300 miles north of Tokyo.
Both quakes measured about 5 on the Richter scale.
