Ireland’s prime minister said the United States, the Common Market and Canada could play a crucial economic and political role in supporting a negotiated solution to the Northern Ireland crisis. But Garrett FitzGerald, on his first official visit to Canada, said he was not seeking the intervention of any outside party in current negotiations aimed at coming up with an acceptable political formula to curb the sectarian violence that has ravaged Northern Ireland for the past 15 years. FitzGerald said the flow of funds and arms from North America to the outlawed Irish Republican Army has declined considerably, largely because of U.S. government action against IRA front groups.
