S. African Union Leader Buried

TSAKANE, South Africa — More than 20,000 mourners singing protest songs today buried a black union leader who died of head injuries after two days in police custody.
No incidents were reported at the funeral of Andries Ratisela, 29, although three bombs seriously damaged court offices and the police station eight hours earlier in the neighboring white town of Brakpan, where he had been jailed. Black workers around the region largely ignored a union call for a one-day strike in memory of Raditsela but many joined a two-hour stoppage shortly after the funeral began.
