Brazilian Poll Shows Approval for President

SAO PAULO, Brazil — Most Brazilians approve of President Jose Sarney’s performance as the country’s first constitutional leader in 21 years, according to a Gallup poll published Wednesday.
Urban dwellers interviewed in April gave Sarney 51% approval, while only 28% gave him a negative rating. Support for Sarney was highest in his poor native northeast and lowest in the rich southern agricultural states, where it dipped just below 50%.
Brazil ended 21 years of military rule when Sarney became interim president on March 15 due to the illness of President-elect Tancredo Neves. He was sworn in officially on April 21 after Neves’ death.
