The board of education has agreed to pay the district’s 2,800 teachers an additional 2% salary increase in compliance with an April court order. Teachers will receive the pay raise--along with 7% interest--on June 14, a district spokeswoman said.

The board voted unanimously Monday to give teachers the raise, which will be retroactive to the beginning of the 1984-85 school year.

An April 8 ruling by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge John L. Cole said the teachers’ current three-year contract with the district requires the school system to increase teachers’ salaries in accordance with increases in education money received from the state.

Long Beach received a 7% increase in state aid at the beginning of the school year, but later received an additional 2% increase. School district officials claimed that the teachers were not entitled to the additional 2%.

The raise will bring teachers between $350 and $700 a year, depending on their salaries. Beginning teachers earn $19,084; teachers with 25 years of experience receive $36,346 annually.
