It’s Back to Health and the Free Life

A couple of now-healthy sea lions, Spunky and Baby, right, raced for the ocean after being rescued and treated by Friends of the Sea Lion, an Orange County wildlife group headquartered in Laguna Canyon.
On Thursday at Laguna Beach, it was back-to-the-sea day for Spunky and Baby, plus another sea lion.
They were picked up separately several weeks ago, one at Newport Beach, one at Doheny State Beach and one at San Clemente. All were very sick with lung parasites and two of the playful creatures had fishhooks lodged in their mouths.
They were medicated and fed until Friends, headed by Bill Ford, decided they were ready to return to the ocean. He said his group treats hundreds of sick or injured marine mammals each year.
