The Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women, at 543 N. Fairfax Ave., has opened a second 24-hour rape hot line to serve Central Los Angeles. The number is (213) 626-3393. The Westside and other areas of Los Angeles County are served by (213) 392-8381.
The free service includes confidential legal, medical and professional counseling.
The new hot line is funded by the state Office of Criminal Justice Planning through a grant for Central Los Angeles. Both hot lines are staffed by volunteers who have completed a 50-hour training program.
For 13 years the commission has operated the Los Angeles Rape and Battering Hotline, which serves all of Los Angeles County. A commission spokesman said it has the highest volume in the state. The commission also offers assault prevention programs, a speakers bureau and a group for victims of sexual assault.
