Burbank advanced to the Southern Section 3-A final with a double-overtime victory over Millikan on Tuesday.
After jumping out to an early 2-0 lead, the Bulldogs were forced to go into the double-overtime shoot-out for the win.
Senior Cesar Zepeda scored the initial Burbank goal with 27 minutes remaining in the first half.
Junior Gino Carbone scored 16 minutes later to put the Bulldogs ahead, 2-0, at halftime.
Millikan refused to give up, though, and scored two goals in the second half. Its first goal came with 17 minutes remaining in the game, and the final goal came with just 30 seconds left.
After battling to a scoreless overtime period, the game was decided in the second overtime on penalty kicks.
As he has done all season, Bulldog goalie Salvador Velasco came through, stopping two of Millikan’s three penalty kicks to wrap up the victory for Burbank, which was successful on all four of its penalty kicks.
Burbank (24-1), the No. 2 team in the 3-A, will now play No. 1-ranked Esperanza, a 4-0 winner over Lompoc, in the championship game Saturday night at Gahr High School at 8:00.
Calabasas 2, St. Bonaventure 0--Calabasas goalie Dave Salvwedel posted his 16th shutout of the season in the Southern Section 1-A semifinals.
The Coyotes scored their first goal 35 minutes into the first half when Paul Ratcliffe converted a free kick after being tripped from behind.
Calabasas added its second goal with seven minutes gone in the second half when Pete Mattson scored after Poe Allan’s miss. St. Bonaventure’s goalie had blocked Allan’s shot from the left wing, but the ball bounced to Mattson, who had an open shot.
With the win, Calabasas (16-5-3) earned its first trip to the finals. Four years ago, it advanced to the semifinals before losing to eventual-champion La Quinta.
The Coyotes will play Agoura, which defeated Elsinore, 4-0, on Tuesday. Agoura, which won the Frontier League, has defeated Calabasas three times this season. Calabasas finished second in the Frontier League.
Girls
Agoura 5, Moorpark 2--Senior forward Tracy Redman scored three goals as unbeaten Agoura downed Moorpark High in the semifinal round of the girls 2-A Southern Section playoffs at Charger Stadium.
Agoura (20-0-2), will face Oak Park, a 2-0 winner over Monrovia, in the championship game Saturday afternoon at Gahr High School.
Leading 4-1 at the beginning of the second half, Redman scored her third goal of the afternoon on a assist from sophomore Wendy Bennett to boost the score to 5-1.
Moorpark forward Wendy Womack scored on a free kick late in the second half to close the gap to 5-2, but Agoura’s defense prevented the Musketeers from threatening again.
The Chargers dominated the game early and Redman scored one of her two first-half goals in the first 45 seconds of the game. Teammate Dawn Krenik also scored in the first half and Bennett added another goal.
“I thought that they would have come out playing us a little harder since we beat them twice,” Redman said. “I’m really excited that we’re going to the finals. This is for the team and the community.”
