Edgewood High Starts Program on Suicide Prevention

WEST COVINA — In the wake of a student suicide in January, Edgewood High School has begun a suicide-prevention program that could include classroom instruction in dealing with suicide.
Principal Don Banderas said a representative from the county Office of Education spoke to teachers and staff members about how to recognize those students who may be contemplating suicide. The school also is working to include information on suicide in freshman science and senior psychology classes.
Although there have been no other suicides at the high school over the past few years, Banderas said, “We think all kids should have a general knowledge of what to do in case they are confronted by the problem.”
The school plans to bring in representatives from Charter Oak Hospital in Covina to present information to students on how to deal with friends who talk about suicide.
