CSUN Holds Loyola Marymount to No Hits in 2 Games

The Cal State Northridge softball team scored three victories Saturday.

Beating the rain was perhaps the most important victory for the Lady Matadors.

Northridge, unable to play for two weeks because of wet weather, completed a doubleheader Saturday against Loyola Marymount before the predicted showers came pouring down on the CSUN field.

And Northridge pitchers Kathy Slaten and Delanee Anderson each tossed a no-hitter as the Lady Matadors swept the Lions, 3-0 and 7-0.

“We’re just glad to get the games in,” said CSUN Coach Gary Torgeson, whose team is now 13-4. “With the two-week layoff, well, if we had played a real tough team it might have been different.”

Loyola is 0-10.

Slaten (4-1), who set a CSUN record with 11 no-hitters last season, faced just one batter over the minimum and had 17 strikeouts in her strongest performance of the season. Slaten lost her bid for the fourth perfect game of her career when she walked Anita DiCecco in the second inning.

“I really don’t think I pitched that well today,” Slaten said.

“I just tried to work the corners. My timing was way off.”

Anderson, a sophomore from Montclair, recorded seven strikeouts in five innings before the second game was called because of rain. Anderson (5-1) has not allowed an earned run in 36 innings.

“This was a good day for Slaten. She needed a game like this,” CSUN Coach Gary Torgeson said. “This was the first time she’s really been able to turn it loose.

“Anderson? Well, she’s been our most consistent pitcher all year.”

Onestinghel, Barbara Jordan and Terri Lamoree all had two hits for the Lady Matadors.

In the second game, CSUN built on a 2-0 lead by scoring five runs on six hits in the third inning.
