College Baseball : Fullerton’s Belanger Blanks USC : Titan Pitcher Throws a Three-Hitter in a 6-0 Victory

Mike Belanger threw a three-hitter and struck out seven batters Wednesday night to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 6-0 victory over USC (18-15) in a nonconference baseball game at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles.
Belanger (4-2) did not allow a walk.
Pat Garman and Don Eccles each went 2 for 5 to lead the Titans (24-10). A double by Eccles was the game’s only extra basehit.
In other nonconference action:
Southern California College 20, Occidental 5--Dean Harvey went 5 for 7 with 2 RBIs to lead the Vanguards to a win at Occidental. Brian Sullivan (5-1) was the winning pitcher. SCC (18-9) plays at Christ College of Irvine today.
Rancho Santiago 12, Cal Poly Pomona 5--Winning pitcher Chris Shiflett (4-1) struck out 12 in six innings and allowed only two hits to lead the Dons (6-3, 16-5). First baseman Ruben Gonzalez was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. David Kirkpatrick also was 3 for 4 with two RBIs. The Dons had 16 hits.
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. action:
Cal State Northridge 13, Chapman College 12--The Matadors’ Chris Pinsack led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a solo homer to give CSUN the victory at Northridge. The teams combined for 29 hits and six home runs. Chapman (3-4, 11-18) scored seven runs in the fourth to gain an 8-2 lead. The Panthers’ Tony Gardea had a three-run homer in the inning and Rob Wolkoys had a two-run home run. Northridge rallied with eight in the fifth, two runs coming on Dan Muzzey’s home run. After Chapman went ahead 12-10, the Matadors tied the score at 12-12 in the sixth on Gary Williams’ home run. Rob Glisson (4-4) was the losing pitcher.
