Davis, Unhappy With Stanford’s Admission Policies, Goes to Iowa

Dr. Tom Davis of Stanford was named Sunday to replace George Raveling as Iowa’s basketball coach.

Davis, 47, had a 58-59 record in four seasons at Stanford and guided the Pacific 10 school to its first winning season in more than a decade. Davis was 14-14, 19-12, 11-17 and 14-16 at Stanford.

Before moving to Stanford in 1982, Davis coached Boston College to a 100-47 record in five seasons and three post-season tournament appearances. He also coached Lafayette University to a 116-44 mark in six seasons.

Davis, who turned down the Houston job last month, has been unhappy with Stanford’s inflexible admission policies that have sent his top recruits elsewhere. Highly rated 6-9 forward Chris Munk of San Francisco Riordan High School was turned down despite a reported 3.2 grade-point average.
