SAN DIEGO — While every other San Diego County high school baseball league begins play by the end of the week, the City Eastern League must wait a couple of weeks.
Since the teams are waiting, the coaches in the league decided to play an in-league preseason tournament. In games Monday, Pt. Loma beat Patrick Henry, 9-1, while Serra beat Mira Mesa, 10-7.
Pt. Loma 9, Patrick Henry 1--Chris Reading pitched a complete-game eight-hitter and Rigo Beltrand hit a three-run home run in the third inning to lead the Pointers (9-2) at Pt. Loma. Beltrand’s home run capped a five-run rally that gave Pt. Loma a 7-0 lead. Pat Evenson had three hits and three RBIs. Danny Talman and Larry Jackel each had two hits for Patrick Henry (7-2).
Serra 10, Mira Mesa 7--The Marauders (7-7) made two of their five errors in the fourth inning to allow the Conquistadors (11-2) to score three runs and break the game open, 7-3. Serra’ Beto Rodriguez was 3 for 5 with a single and a RBI, and Kim Finn was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Ronnie Lardizabal (3-2) went the distance, despite giving up 13 hits and five earned runs. Essex Burton was 4 for 4 for the Marauders.
