Stevenson Thrown by Horse, Fractures Back

HANOVER, Ill. — Democratic gubernatorial candidate Adlai Stevenson III was being treated today for a vertebrae fracture suffered when he was thrown from a horse he was trying to rebreak at his farm, campaign aides said.
A spokesman for Mercy Medical Center in nearby Dubuque, Iowa, said Stevenson, 55, will not need surgery after the Sunday accident but may remain hospitalized for several days.
