GARDENA — The City Council voted 4 to 1 to approve construction of a classroom building and to allow increased enrollment at the Calvary Baptist Church’s school. An overflow crowd of parents, students and neighbors turned out for the meeting, at which the council voted to let the school add two grade levels to the elementary school.
Calvary Baptist, at 2818 Manhattan Beach Blvd., had encountered resistance from residents in its bid to replace two single-story buildings with one three-story building and to increase enrollment from the cur rent 327 to a maximum of 550. Residents said they were concerned about excessive noise levels from the playground, as well as the effects of the taller building on nearby homes.
As a condition of approval, the school agreed to form a “good-will committee” to resolve conflicts between neighbors and the church.
