Campbell Hugh Greenup, whose first trial on charges of molesting students at his private elementary school ended with a deadlocked jury, will be retried, Chief Deputy Dist. Atty. Gilbert I. Garcetti said. Garcetti said the decision was made after Deputy Dist. Atty. Kenneth R. Freeman, the prosecutor, interviewed a number of jurors in the first trial. Greenup was acquitted on two counts but jurors split on 19 other counts. “The comments of the jurors were very supportive in terms of retrying (the case),” Garcetti said. Greenup, 59, is accused of fondling eight female pupils, ages 4 to 11, at his Northridge school between 1978 and 1984. Regarding the retrial, defense attorney Deputy Public Defender Henry J. Hall, said, “From a legal standpoint, we’re in a much better position.” Now that the defense is familiar with the children who accused Greenup, the attorney said, it will be easier to try to impeach their testimony.
