$65-Billion Gas Pact for Norway

OSLO — Norway, outbidding the Soviet Union and Algeria, announced a $65-billion agreement today that will deliver natural gas from two North Sea fields to Western Europe well into the 21st Century.
Oil and Energy Minister Arne Oien said the delivery agreement for 15.9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas was “the biggest export contract in Norwegian history.” The deal was signed by Statoil, Norway’s state oil company, and its new continental partners--Ruhrgas, Thyssengas and BEB of West Germany; the Dutch state company, Gasunie; Distrigaz of Belgium, and the French company Gaz de France.
