A 31-year-old Agoura Hills man who lost part of his left hand Saturday while setting off home-made fireworks outside his home was arrested after undergoing an operation for his injuries, authorities said Sunday.
Jerry Osborn was being held in the jail ward at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center in lieu of $60,000 bail. He was listed in stable condition.
Osborn walked into a fire station in Agoura Hills about 2:30 p.m. and told firefighters he had been injured when explosives detonated in his hand, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Joe Davis said.
Davis said sheriff’s investigators were sent to Osborn’s home on Agoura Road, where they found chemicals and blasting caps used in manufacturing “M-80” firecrackers. An arson squad detonated a small amount of the explosives at the home, Davis said.
Osborn faces charges of possession of materials with intent to manufacture explosives and unlawful detonation of explosive devices, Davis said. Investigators said Osborn was testing the fireworks he had made a few weeks earlier and apparently was unaware of how quickly they had destabilized.
