Two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were suspended without pay after charges that they beat a 22-year-old man at Lennox sheriff’s station. A sheriff’s spokesman said Jim Gates, 32, and Donnie Johnson Jr., 26, were accused of beating Alfredo Beac while booking him in a private station office last July 24. Beac, an Inglewood resident, had been arrested by Gates and Johnson several days earlier for drinking in a public place, but reportedly escaped when the deputies’ patrol car was involved in a traffic collision. Beac was rearrested when an anonymous informant telephoned the station about his whereabouts. The assault allegedly occurred when Gates and Johnson arrived at the station to book him as the man who had escaped from them.
