Community College Roundup : Smith’s Goal Paces Orange Coast, 1-0

Bill Smith scored 10 minutes into the first half Wednesday to give the Orange Coast College soccer team a 1-0 victory over Cypress in an Orange Empire Conference match at Cypress.

John Footman had 11 saves to record his fifth conference shutout for Orange Coast (8-0-2 in conference and 10-5-2 overall). The Pirates play at Rancho Santiago College (7-1-1) Friday to determine the Orange Empire Conference champion.

In volleyball:

Orange Coast 3, Rancho Santiago 0--Cindy Thomas had 12 kills to lead the Pirates over the Dons, 15-3, 15-9, 15-9, in an Orange Empire Conference at Orange Coast College. The Pirates are 7-0, 11-2. Rancho Santiago is 3-4 and 5-5.

Riverside City 3, Saddleback 1--The Tigers rallied to defeat the Gauchos, 12-15, 15-7, 15-5, 15-6, in an Orange Empire Conference match at Saddleback College. The Gauchos drop to 0-7 in conference, 1-12 overall.

Golden West 3, Fullerton 1--Barrie Dafforn had 23 kills, and Leslie Osterman had 58 assists and 5 service aces to lead the Rustlers to a 16-18, 15-11, 15-11, 15-13 win in a South Coast Conference match at Fullerton College. The Rustlers are 6-3, 9-3. The Hornets are 5-4 and 7-5.
