WILSHIRE CENTER

A sculptural installation by Masayuki Oda puts one in mind of the kind of magical gardens we wander in our dreams. Titled “Autumn 1986,” the piece is composed of 12 oxidized steel platforms mounted on elegant black pedestals approximately five feet high. The platform serves as ground for sculptured landscapes that find trees resembling exclamation points and boulders balanced in such a way as to defy gravity. One platform features a Rapunzel’s tower with a tiny window at the top, another is forested with a grove of phallic shapes. The piece is gracefully understated and very much in the Minimalist tradition in that the slightest gesture signals a major shift in mood.
