Newport Center Vote

In my 27-year career as a city administrator, it has been necessary to correct a false statement or a misstatement by a reporter only on two or three occasions. Such an event occurred in the Los Angeles Times on Sunday, Nov. 16, in an article written about Proposition A on the Newport Center expansion.
A direct quote attributed to me said, “But how do you say no when they (Irvine Co.) hound you and hound you? You can’t.” This statement is totally untrue. I never said it. The only comment that I gave was that I couldn’t participate in the video during regular city working hours and that it had to be filmed, therefore, after 5 p.m. I am at a total loss as to why your reporter interpreted my statement as quoted in the newspaper. I hope it was a misunderstanding.
