The Indian government asked for $3 billion in a damage suit against Union Carbide Corp. on behalf of victims of the 1984 gas leak in Bhopal, India, that killed more than 2,000 people and injured tens of thousands. Earlier this year, New Delhi had turned down Union Carbide’s offer to settle damage claims for $350 million. In Danbury, Conn., a Union Carbide spokesman said the $3-billion amount was “without foundation and totally inconsistent”with India’s previous demands. The Dec. 3, 1984, leak of methyl isocyanate from a pesticide plant spread deadly gas over a wide area in Bhopal, 375 miles south of New Delhi.
