Huntington Beach : Bomb Left Under Car of Police Records Clerk

A Fountain Valley police records clerk discovered a pipe bomb attached to her car, which was parked outside her house, authorities said Tuesday.

Janet Martin, 35, of Huntington Beach thought she saw a tree branch under her 1971 Pontiac Ventura about 7:20 a.m. Monday, said Huntington Beach public information officer Joanne Bonkowski.

“On closer inspection she saw some wires, and on even closer inspection she saw a pipe attached to her gas tank, and called the Huntington Beach Police Department,” Bonkowski said.

The department’s explosives disposal unit defused the bomb, according to Bonkowski. She said “the device was live. It would have gone off if she had started the car.”

Although police Tuesday ended a 24-hour information blackout about the incident, they continued to withhold details about the bomb, potential suspects and a motive, saying that publicizing such information would compromise their investigation.

Martin could not be reached for comment.
