United Way of the Bay Area announced that it raised $42 million for its 1986 annual fund-raising drive, an increase of $210,000 over 1985. The organization raises funds from Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo counties. Most of the money came through payroll deductions from employees at the workplace. About 25,000 businesses participated.
