Anaheim : Council Agrees to Sale of Cable TV to ML Media

The City Council has tentatively agreed to allow ML Media to take over ownership of the city cable television franchise from Storer Cable.
The switch will not affect customer rates or cable services, Assistant City Manager Cindy King said. However, King said that rate deregulation, approved by Congress, may affect monthly customer payments later next year.
Storer Cable, which was granted the cable television franchise in 1979 by city ordinance, also is selling franchises in Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Villa Park to ML Media.
“We have watched the growth of Anaheim and we saw a great opportunity here,” Elton H. Rule, a partner in ML Media, said.
Although the tentative vote on the Anaheim sale was unanimous, Mayor Ben Bay said he wants ML Media to concentrate on improving services and responding to customer complaints.
“I’m looking for commitment from them (ML Media),” Bay said after the vote. “We don’t want just lip service. We want action if it’s needed.”
The city is requiring that ML Media provide consumer protection by crediting customers if the service is inadequate, King said.
