Very Subtle Wins Santa Ynez Stakes

Very Subtle scored her sixth straight victory Saturday, winning the $79,950 Santa Ynez Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Santa Anita.
Jockey Bill Shoemaker, substituting for suspended Pat Valenzuela, took the undefeated filly to the front at the start, nursed a short lead to the stretch and opened up to win the seven-furlong race by 4 1/2 lengths in 1:22 3/5.
Very Subtle, a 1-5 favorite, returned $2.60, $2.40 and $2.10. Chic Shirine was second and paid $5.20 and $2.40, and Young Flyer was third and returned $2.20.
Very Subtle earned $46,200 for her owners, Carl Grinstead and Ben Rochelle, and increased her lifetime earnings to $400,625.
