Residents of Krugersdorp, South Africa, went to the movies for what appeared to be the last time Saturday because the town council of the Transvaal mining community refused to open its cinemas to all races. Ster-Kinekor Co., which manages the Krugersdorp theaters as well as most of the country’s other cinemas, set a Jan. 31 deadline for the council to desegregate the houses. American film distributors have threatened a boycott unless Ster-Kinekor’s 183 cinemas and drive-ins are integrated by May 1.
Hollywood turned 100 Sunday.
