ACADEMY ELECTS CALISHER PRESIDENT

NEW YORK — Members of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters have elected author Hortense Calisher as the academy’s new president.
Calisher, renowned as a novelist and writer of short stories, succeeds John Kenneth Galbraith, who served for three years. Academy members include notable American artists, writers and composers.
