In a People magazine poll of 9,759 readers (published this week, just in time for Hollywood’s centennial), Katharine Hepburn was chosen as the greatest female star ever, garnering 36% of the tally. Cary Grant was the dominant male star, but he beat out Clark Gable by only 2 percentage points, 18% to 16%. Bette Davis was the No. 2 screen woman with 14% and Meryl Streep third with 8%. Behind Grant and Gable were John Wayne with 8.2%, Spencer Tracy with 7.9% and Jimmy Stewart with 7.3%. Among those the People poll’s respondents found overrated, Sylvester Stallone led the men, with 32% saying he was no big deal, and Madonna topped the female list with 18%.
