SAN FRANCISCO — Mary McKinney, believed to be the oldest survivor of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, has died at age 113.
Mrs. McKinney died Monday at the Little Sisters of the Poor in San Francisco, her home for the last year.
She was “in bed with my hubby,” James, when the earthquake struck, she said last year.
“We had to cook in the gutter for quite a while,” she said. “We slept on blankets on the ground, and the worst of it was we couldn’t change clothes, couldn’t wash. We were lucky to get water.”
Born in Sacramento, Mrs. McKinney grew up in Oakland and was a dancer there before moving to San Francisco.
