20 Hurt as Student Protesters Skirmish With Police in Spain

MADRID — High school students demanding lower fees and easier admission to college pelted riot police with rocks and garbage Friday at a rally outside government headquarters, despite a ban on demonstrations.
City officials said 13 police officers and seven students were injured in three hours of skirmishes, and 17 students were arrested.
The clashes marked the latest violence in six weeks of protests by Spain’s 2.1 million public high school students.
About 6,000 students converged Friday on a plaza near the building where the Socialist government was holding its weekly Cabinet meeting.
Most were quickly dispersed by police using rubber clubs, but about 200 broke through police lines and pushed toward the government building, hurling rocks, bottles, wooden planks and garbage at police, officials said.
