A militant tribal group that waged a 20-year guerrilla campaign in northeastern India’s territory of Mizoram swept to power in local elections after a peace accord with Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The Mizo National Front won 25 of the 39 state assembly races decided in Mizoram, which borders Burma and Bangladesh. Gandhi’s Congress-I party won only 12 seats. The new Mizoram government is to take office Friday, the same day Mizoram will be upgraded from a federal territory to a state.
