Peruvian Students Battle With Riot Police

LIMA, Peru — Thousands of students battled riot police at a downtown plaza Wednesday in the second violent protest this week over recent police raids on university campuses.
About 5,000 students rallied to demand release of 173 classmates and 100 other people still held on suspicion of being leftist terrorists. They were among nearly 800 arrested in raids on five Lima campuses last Friday.
Students carried banners accusing President Alan Garcia’s center-left party Aprista of being fascist. They had official permission to assemble and hear speeches condemning the campus invasions.
