North Won’t ‘Play President-Bashing,’ He Tells Reporters

WASHINGTON — Lt. Col. Oliver L. North, the National Security Council deputy fired for his role in the Iran- contra scandal, refused today to “play President-bashing.”
North has refused to testify about his role in the scandal, invoking the Fifth Amendment in appearances before congressional panels.
President Reagan, who has called North a national hero, said in a televised address Wednesday night that mistakes were made and that he took responsibility for the affair, but he stopped short of apologizing.
As North left for work today, reporters waiting outside his Great Falls, Va., home asked if the failure of Reagan to apologize was a mistake.
“Let me tell you something, guys,” North responded. “If you came all the way to Great Falls to find somebody to play President-bashing with you, you came to the wrong driveway.”
