The World : U.S. Assails Cuba on Rights

The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Vernon A. Walters, accusing Cuba of “systematic and flagrant” human rights violations, charged that the Cuban government is holding an estimated 14,000 political prisoners. At a meeting of the U.N. Human Rights Commission in Geneva, Walters called for international pressure on Cuban President Fidel Castro to win their release. The commission will vote on the motion March 11, a few days before ending its annual six-week session. A majority of yes votes is needed for adoption of the motion.
