WEEKEND BOX OFFICE

Audiences aren’t tiring of the seemingly endless “Police Academy” sequels; “Police Academy IV: Citizens on Patrol” nabbed $8,482,487 from 1,750 screens its opening weekend. Impressive, since the sum almost equals last year’s “Police Academy III,” which earned slightly more than $9 million on 1,788 screens its opening weekend. Second-place “Blind Date” took in $5,728,421 at 1,251 screens, down from last weekend’s $7.5 million opening, but not the box-office poison critics predicted. The box office for best picture winner “Platoon” jumped 20% to $4,737,808 at 1,564 theaters, a good indication of the economic value of an Oscar. “Lethal Weapon” dropped 19%, but added $4,074,088 for a box-office total of $39,287,925.
