2 Buddhists Found Dead in Azusa Retreat

A Buddhist monk and his attendant were found shot to death Tuesday at the Azusa retreat where they lived, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said.
The bodies of the victims, each of whom had been shot several times, were found by two other members of the Progressive Buddhist Assn. who arrived at the retreat in the 1800 block of San Gabriel Canyon Road shortly before 1 p.m.
The monk was identified as Seng-Chwan Tan, 40, and the other victim as Choon Hock Lim, 60. Their bodies were discovered by two women taking them food, authorities said.
Deputies said no weapon was found. But they declined to say whether there were any signs of ransacking or struggle and whether anything appeared to have been taken.
The Azusa group originated in Sri Lanka and has been in this country for about seven years, according to other Buddhists in Los Angeles.
Neighbors said the retreat was an old house taken over by the group about six months ago.
