Crespi Track Team Defeats Alemany, Takes Big Stride Toward Del Rey Championship

After five years the waiting is almost over for Crespi’s track team. The Celts haven’t won a Del Rey League title since 1982 but they took a giant step toward rectifying that situation Wednesday with a 77-49 victory over Alemany at home.
Crespi can clinch the title if it beats a weak osco Tech team in two weeks.
Crespi’s superior depth was the key to the victory. The Celts won only seven of the 13 individual events but swept the 120-yard high hurdles and shotput and won both relays.
Sophomore Russell White won three events and senior Rodney Hupalo won two as Crespi (6-0, 5-0) remained undefeated.
White scored 15 points with victories in the 220-yard dash (23.2), the long jump (20-11 3/4) and the triple jump (44-1 1/2). Hupalo added 10 points in the 120-yard high hurdles (a wind-aided 14.7) and the 330-yard intermediate hurdles (41.8).
Steve Puryear led Crespi’s sweep in the shotput with a throw of 54-8, and Chris Rawlings won the 100 meters in a wind-aided 11.0.
Dave Swanson, the defending league champion, won the high jump at 6-8, and placed second in the long jump (20-2 1/2) and the triple jump (43-6 3/4) for Alemany.
