Joe Harrington, who has coached George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., the last seven seasons, will be the new men’s basketball coach at Cal State Long Beach, Athletic Director Corey Johnson said Thursday.
“He’ll be here,” Johnson said. The selection of Harrington will be announced at a news conference today.
Harrington, 41, had a 112-85 record at George Mason, and his team played in the National Invitation Tournament in 1986. George Mason was 15-13 this season.
A former player at the University of Maryland, Harrington was an assistant to Lefty Driesell for nine seasons and was head coach for a year at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.
Harrington replaces Ron Palmer, who had a 23-64 record in three seasons with the 49ers. Palmer resigned March 2.
Ed Ratleff, a 49er assistant coach, was a finalist for the job.
