Unruh Hospitalized With Clot in His Leg

State Treasurer Jesse M. Unruh was admitted to the UCLA Medical Center suffering from a blood clot in his leg, Unruh’s chief deputy reported Wednesday.
Unruh, 64, the former “Big Daddy” Speaker of the Assembly and a four-term treasurer, was diagnosed with phlebitis after admitting himself to the hospital late Monday afternoon, Deputy Treasurer Liz Whitney said.
She said he is scheduled to be released from the hospital Sunday.
“He has been hooked up to an IV (intravenous tube) and he’s being treated,” Whitney said.
UCLA spokesman Mike Byrne described Unruh’s condition as good.
Whitney said the phlebitis was unconnected to Unruh’s prostate cancer, which was first reported last year.
