Forest fires on both sides of the Canadian border darkened the skies over North Dakota and northern Minnesota. Thomas Kroll of Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources in Grand Rapids said that fires raging out of control in Manitoba and Ontario, in addition to others in the state, had caused “a blanket of smoke that is readily seen and smelled.” He said one fire north of Winnipeg had destroyed more than 80 homes and threatened 50 others. Meanwhile, a blaze near Roseau, Minn., had blackened an area of more than 3,000 acres.
