Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young testified before a federal grand jury investigating city officials’ handling of cocaine-use allegations against former state Sen. Julian Bond, but the mayor remained tight-lipped about his testimony. Bond’s estranged wife, Alice, accused her husband, Young and others of cocaine use. They denied the allegations, and Mrs. Bond retracted her charges in a newspaper interview. The grand jury began looking into possible obstruction of justice after three police officers on the case were transferred and Young acknowledged telephoning Mrs. Bond after learning of her statements to law enforcement officials.
