Tony Robinson, former Tennessee quarterback serving a nine-month sentence for a cocaine conviction, will be freed Sunday to attempt a professional football career.
But Judge Ray Jenkins of Knox County Criminal Court said that Robinson’s freedom is temporary and that he eventually must return to the Knox County Penal Farm to finish his sentence.
Defense attorney Tim Priest asked Jenkins to release Robinson so he could rehabilitate his knee and attend National Football League summer tryout camps.
The judge said that Robinson must “surrender immediately” to complete the penal farm stint if he fails to make a pro team. Should he become an NFL player, Robinson must return to the farm when the football season ends.
