The Region : Doctors to Provide Care for Homeless

A group of Los Angeles doctors have announced plans to treat medical problems of the homeless on a regular basis. Dr. James Mays said volunteer nurses and physicians will be working with the homeless activist group, Justiceville, in “mobile search teams” and then “treat non-emergency problems, to prevent major disease. For those that require more extensive care, we will get them assistance.” A fund-raising effort is under way to pay for a van to provide the service, he added. Meanwhile, a Florida-based physician said he had finalized arrangements for a group of 20 doctors to treat residents at the city’s urban campground at 320 S. Santa Fe Ave. After surveying the campground, Dr. David Stein of St. Petersburg said people there were “in worse shape than even people I’ve seen in underdeveloped countries.”
